What does a PFT measure?
A pulmonary function test measures lung volumes, airflow rates such as FEV1 and FVC, and often how well gas passes into the blood. Together these show whether a breathing problem is obstructive, restrictive or mixed.
What is the difference between a PFT and spirometry?
Spirometry is one component of a full PFT, measuring how much and how fast you can blow out. A complete PFT adds lung volume and diffusion measurements.
How do you prepare for a PFT?
Clinics usually ask you to avoid heavy meals, smoking and vigorous exercise beforehand, and to hold certain inhalers for a set number of hours. Follow the specific instructions your clinic gives.
