API terms of use

1. Your account and key

You need a verified FreeDict account to get a key. Each key belongs to one account. Keep it secret and on your server. You are responsible for all calls made with your key. If you think it has leaked, regenerate it from Account → API; the old key stops working straight away.

2. Plans and use

• Free: non-commercial projects only, up to 3,000 calls a month, with the attribution in section 5.
• Starter, Pro and Business: commercial use is allowed, within your plan's monthly allowance and rate limit.
• Enterprise, AI grounding and dataset licences: governed by a separate written agreement.

You may use API data inside your own app, site or service. You may not resell or redistribute the data as a dataset, offer it as your own API, or use it to train or fine-tune AI models, unless you have an Enterprise agreement that allows it.

3. Caching

You may cache API data to make your product faster, for up to 24 hours on Free and Starter, 7 days on Pro and 30 days on Business, after which it must be refreshed or deleted. Storing data for longer, or building an offline copy of the dictionary, needs an Enterprise agreement.

4. Billing

• Paid plans are billed in US dollars, monthly or yearly in advance, through our payment provider, Stripe.
• Plans renew automatically at the end of each period until you cancel. You can cancel at any time from Account → API; you keep your plan until the end of the period you have paid for, then move to Free. We do not refund part-used periods.
• Calls beyond your monthly allowance on a paid plan are charged at your plan's overage rate and added to your next invoice. Only successful calls count.
• If a payment fails, we may move your key to the Free plan until it is paid.
• We may change prices with at least 30 days' notice by email. The change applies from your next renewal.

5. Attribution

On the Free plan, show a visible “Powered by FreeDict” link to https://freedict.com wherever our data appears. Paid plans do not need it. Some records draw on third-party open sources; the source information returned with each record, and our sources and attributions page, say what applies.

6. Fair use

Do not try to get around rate limits or allowances, for example by using several free accounts; do not probe for other people's keys or data; and do not use the API for anything unlawful. We may suspend a key that does, or that puts the service at risk.

7. Service

We work to keep the API fast and available, but on the Free, Starter, Pro and Business plans it is provided "as is" without a guaranteed uptime. Enterprise agreements can include an SLA. We may add fields at any time; within a version (v1), we will not remove or rename fields without notice.

8. Ownership and liability

FreeDict keeps all rights in the API and its data except as these terms allow. Dictionary data is provided for reference and may contain mistakes. To the extent the law allows, our total liability to you is limited to the fees you paid us in the 12 months before the claim.

9. Ending access

You can stop using the API and delete your key at any time. We may end or suspend access if you break these terms. Sections 2, 3 and 8 continue to apply to data you already hold.
