An aftershock is itself an earthquake — the term describes its relationship to an earlier, larger quake nearby, not its size or nature. If a later quake is bigger than the first, the naming is revised: the original becomes a foreshock and the new one the mainshock. The labels are relative, and they can change after the fact.
The core difference
