Etymology

Borrowed from French aspic, from Latin aspis, and possibly influenced by French basilic ('basilisk'). The culinary sense may have arisen from the dish's association with the snake, because of the traditional colours and cold temperature of aspic, and because the gelatin was often moulded into a shape resembling a coiled snake.
