Came into English via Middle English clenchen, from Old English clenċan ("to clinch; hold fast"), a variant of Old English clenġan ("to adhere; remain"), from Proto-Germanic *klangijaną, the causative of *klinganą ("to stick; adhere"). It is related to cling.
