Borrowed from Middle French collision, from Latin collīsiō ("clash, concussion, collision") — which gave rise to -ion (a noun suffix denoting action, result, process, state or condition) — from collīsus ("clashed together, conflicted, contended"), the past participle of collīdō ("to clash, strike, dash, beat, or press together", which also gave English collide), from con- ("together") plus laedō ("to strike, collide, hurt", which gave col-, an assimilated form of com-).
