Etymology

Comes from Middle English gimlet, among other forms, from Old French guinbelet, guimbelet, guibelet, probably a diminutive of the Anglo-Norman wimble, a variant of guimble (“drill”), from Middle Low German wiemel; it continues in Modern French as gibelet. The cocktail is named either after the tool, for its penetrating effects, or after British Navy surgeon Thomas Gimlette (1857–1943).
