glower

Etymology

This word comes from an alteration, possibly Scots, of glore, from Middle English glōren, glouren (“to gleam; to glare, glower”); alternatively it may come from glow (“to stare”, now obsolete), ultimately from a Scandinavian (North Germanic) language. It is cognate with Low German gloren (“to flicker; to glimmer”), Dutch gloren and Icelandic glóra. On the surface it analyses as glow plus -er (a fossilised frequentative suffix). See more at glare.
