Etymology
This word came from Middle English Jesu, which reflects the vocative (and genitive, etc) form Jēsū of Latin Jēsūs, and also the vocative (and genitive, etc) form Ἰησοῦ (Iēsoû) of Ancient Greek Ἰησοῦς (Iēsoûs). It was gradually replaced as the usual form by Jesus during the Middle English and Early Modern English periods, though it was kept or brought back, especially in some religious texts, on the model of Latin and Greek.
