From German Kafka, from Czech German Kavka (“jackdaw”), from either Upper Sorbian or Lower Sorbian, which are ultimately from the Proto-Slavic *kavъka, imitating the call of a jackdaw. Compare Polish kawka, Czech kavka, Slovene kávka, all meaning “jackdaw”.
