littoral

Etymology

This word derives from Late Latin littoralis, from litoris (the genitive of litus). The doubled 't' was added late in the medieval period, and the more classical spelling litoral is also sometimes found. It is a cognate of French littoral, Spanish litoral and Portuguese litoral, and, more distantly, of English lido (“outdoor pool”), which reached English via Italian lido (“beach, shore”).
