Etymology

This may go back to Old English Leodis ("a Celtic kingdom"). Joseph Wright's English Dialect Dictionary instead traced it to Marsh Lane in Leeds (volume 3, page 565). In the Leeds area, "lane" used to be said as /lɔɪn/, though that pronunciation has since died out.
