Etymology

In Scotland, it is an anglicisation of the Scottish Gaelic Mac Amhalghaidh (“son of Amhalghaidh”). In Ireland, it is an anglicisation of the Gaelic Mac Amhlaoibh (“son of Amhlaoibh”) or Mac Amhlaidh (“son of Amhlaidh”). These Gaelic names in turn derive from the Old Norse personal names Áleifr and Óláfr.
