Etymology

The name came into English via Latin Mālāchiās, which developed from Ancient Greek Μαλαχίας (Malakhías), in turn from Hebrew מַלְאָכִי (mal'achi, malʼāḵî, literally “my messenger”). This is the singular form of מַלְאָךְ (mal'akh, “angel; messenger; ambassadors”), with the first-person singular personal pronoun added as possessor.
