Etymology

Comes via Middle English muscilage, mussillage, from Middle French mucilage (“viscous substance found in vegetable material”), which came from Late Latin mūcilāgō (“musty or moldy juice”). See Greek μούχλα (moúchla, “mold”), and related derivatives such as mushroom, from *meus- (“mosses, mold, mildew”).
