Etymology

Comes from Latin mūnitiō (“a defence, fortification”), which reached English via French munition. Mūnitiō was built from mūnīre (“fortify, defend (with a wall)”) plus -tiō, and mūnīre itself traces to moenia (“city walls, defensive walls, or walls in general”). Equivalent to munite + -ion.
