Etymology

Comes from Middle English mirke, merke, which developed from Old English mirce, myrce (“darkness, gloom”) and Old Norse myrkr (“darkness, gloom”). Both of these trace back to Proto-Germanic *merkwą, *mirkwiz (“darkness”), and further to Proto-Indo-European *mergʷ- (“to flicker; to darken; to be dark”).
