Etymology

Derived from Ancient Greek Παλλάς (Pallás), a feminine form, or Πάλλας (Pállas), a masculine form, which came from πάλλω (pállō, "to poise, sway, or swing"), though the ancients themselves glossed it more specifically as meaning to brandish something. Because Athena was conventionally shown holding a spear or shield, the epithet was taken to refer to her brandishing these things.
