Etymology

First recorded between about 1425 and 1475, from late Middle English paterfamilias, taken from Latin pater familiās. This comes from Latin pater, meaning "father", plus familiās, an archaic genitive form of familia, meaning "family; household". Literally, it means "father of the family" or "father of the household".
