Came from Late Latin recapitulātus, the past participle of recapitulāre (“to go over the main points of a thing again”), formed from re- (“again”) and capitulum (“head, main part, chapter”), itself from caput (“head”) and -ulum (a diminutive suffix); see also capitulate. Taken at face value it breaks down as re- plus capitulate.
