Etymology

Came into English from Middle English sojourne (the noun) and sojournen (the verb), from Old French sojor, sojorner (modern séjour, séjourner), from an assumed Vulgar Latin *subdiurnāre, from Latin sub- (“under, a little over”) and Late Latin diurnus (“lasting for a day”), itself from Latin dies (“day”).
