Etymology

Came into English from Middle English spalle (“a chip”), first recorded in 1440, though its ultimate origin is uncertain. It may derive from the Middle English verb spald (“to split”), recorded around 1400, from Middle Low German spalden, which is cognate with Old High German spaltan (“to split”).
