What does bubbler mean?
A public drinking water fountain. The term is dominant in eastern Massachusetts and eastern Wisconsin — two pockets that, weirdly, share the word while the rest of the country says 'water fountain' or 'drinking fountain'. Often pronounced 'bubblah' in Boston.
"Kid, the bubblah is right around the corner from the gym."
Origin
Believed to derive from early 20th-century drinking-fountain designs (notably Kohler's of Wisconsin) that bubbled water upward. Spread regionally and stuck in two non-contiguous areas.
