infinite
What does infinite mean?
A combo sequence that resets into itself, so once you start it the opponent is locked down and you can theoretically keep going until the round ends. Most modern fighters add damage scaling or burst mechanics to kill them off.
"He found an infinite in the corner off a wall splat, so that character got patched within a week."
Origin
Fighting game community; the term describes any combo with no built-in escape, dating back to early 2D fighters where scaling and damage-prevention systems were weaker.
Frequently asked questions
Are infinites banned in tournaments?
Sometimes. In older games with broken infinites, organisers banned specific characters or loops. Modern fighters usually patch them out or build in systems that prevent them.
