Named after the Ijele masquerade, the towering, elaborately decorated 'king of masquerades' in Igbo culture, regarded as the largest and most revered masquerade in the region. As slang, calling someone (often a woman with a striking, statuesque presence) 'Ijele' or 'ijele nwanyi' is high praise for grandeur, class, wealth, or sheer impressiveness.

The umbrella for everything that involves hitting. Bare hand, paddle, flogger, crop, cane, riding whip, the toolkit is broad and so is the intensity, from a warm-up spanking to serious heavy play. Thuddy (deep, dull) versus stingy (sharp, surface) is the language people use to describe the sensation. The bottom takes the strikes; aftercare usually follows.

The area where waves break with the most force and pitch onto the surface; the worst place to be caught during a set.

impermanent loss

The loss a liquidity provider incurs, relative to simply holding, when the prices of the two pooled assets move apart. It's 'impermanent' because it can reverse if prices return, but becomes real on withdrawal.

A trick invented by Rodney Mullen in which the board wraps 360 degrees vertically around the rider's back foot, appearing to defy gravity. Named for how impossible it looked when first performed.

Physically or emotionally destroyed. The classic Sunday-morning hangover state — you're not standing, you're a pile of yourself on the couch.

Detroit goodbye. Despite the wording, it doesn't mean sixty seconds — it means 'sometime soon, whenever'. Functionally identical to 'later' or 'in a bit', just with the D's cadence on it.

Street

Cockney rhyming slang for snout; 'snout' in turn is prison slang for tobacco or an informer.

in bits

General

In a very poor state: badly hungover, distraught or exhausted.

in bulk

General

Laughing so hard you can't breathe. 'He had me in bulk' means whatever he said wiped the floor with you — proper belly-laugh, not a polite chuckle. Same family as 'in bits' or 'crying'.

in high cotton

General

Enjoying success or good fortune. Tall cotton meant an easy, profitable picking season.

in his pocket

General

When a defender marks an attacker so effectively that the opponent barely gets a kick.

in it for the tech

Internet

A phrase, usually ironic, claiming interest in the underlying technology rather than speculative gains — typically said while very much watching the price.

in rag order

General

In a complete state — drunk, hungover, hungover from being drunk, or just looking like you slept in a hedge. Anything tattered, chaotic, or falling apart. The 'rags' do the heavy lifting.

in ribbons

General

Shredded. Most often drunk to pieces, but also used for anyone wrecked — laughing, crying, knackered. You've come apart at the seams.

in the bag

General

On uniformed patrol duty in the NYPD. The 'bag' is the blue uniform itself, so being 'in the bag' means you haven't (yet) made detective or gone plainclothes.

General

Earning more than is spent; financially profitable.

in the bonus

When a team commits enough team fouls in a period that the opponent shoots free throws on every subsequent foul.

in the cut

Street

A location hidden from surveillance cameras and officer sightlines, where fights or deals happen. Also 'the blind spot' or 'the wall.'

Of a person, feeling great and doing everything just right.

The hitter who is second in line to bat, following the on-deck batter.

Being part of the group that is aware of what is happening on a topic.
