Spending more than is earned; the opposite of 'in the black'.
in the weeds

Restaurant industry shorthand for being hopelessly behind — tickets piling up, sauté pans on fire, brain offline. Said by cooks and servers when the rail has won and they're just trying to survive the next twenty minutes.
in this essay i will
Internet
You state a deranged or hyper-specific opinion, end with 'in this essay I will -' and just stop. The implied essay does the comedic work. Stating you're going to defend something is funnier than defending it.
in-and-out dribble
General
A dribble move faking a crossover by moving the ball inward then back out in the same hand to freeze the defender.
in-two-twos
General
An expression meaning something happened rapidly. Also 'in two-twos'.
inc

The two-letter panic button. Drop "inc" in chat and your team knows a force is bearing down, get ready or get rolled.
incall
General
A booking that takes place at the provider's own location — her flat, a working apartment, or a short-let hotel room she's renting for the day. Safer for the worker (home turf, known exits, cameras) and usually cheaper than outcall.
incarceritis
General
Mock 'diagnosis' for a detainee who suddenly develops complaints on arrest, seeking hospital over custody. Also 'jailitis.'
incentivize
General
To motivate behaviour by offering a reward or advantage.
incidentaloma
General
An unexpected, usually benign lesion discovered incidentally on imaging performed for an unrelated reason. The '-oma' mimics tumour nomenclature.
indians
Street
Short for Mardi Gras Indians: Black New Orleans 'tribes' (Wild Magnolias, Wild Tchoupitoulas, Yellow Pocahontas, Creole Wild West and dozens more) who mask in suits hand-sewn over a full year — beads, feathers, sequins, weighing 100 pounds plus. They march on Mardi Gras morning and Super Sunday, meet other tribes, and 'battle' through chants, dance, and who's prettiest. Honoring the Native communities who once sheltered escaped slaves.
indica
Street
A cannabis category traditionally linked to sedating, relaxing 'body high' effects (mnemonic: 'in-da-couch').
indie sleaze
Pop
A mood of careless, chaotic, cool-kid grunge-glam decadence.
indy

An air in which the rider grabs the frontside (toe) edge of the board between the feet with the trailing (back) hand. One of the most fundamental and stylish grabs.
infinite

A combo sequence that resets into itself, so once you start it the opponent is locked down and you can theoretically keep going until the round ends. Most modern fighters add damage scaling or burst mechanics to kill them off.
infinite sword glitch
Gaming
An Ocarina of Time glitch that leaves Link's sword damage hitbox permanently active, so just walking into enemies hurts them. It also enables other tricks and gives bottles a telltale graphical glitch while it's on.
informa
General
Someone who informs to the police or betrays others; a snitch — heavily condemned in dancehall culture.
inhibitor
Gaming
A structure sitting in front of the Nexus on each lane. Knock one down and the enemy team starts pumping out super minions in that lane, piling on pressure. They respawn after about five minutes, so it's a temporary advantage you have to cash in.
initiation
Gaming
Someone has to throw the first punch. Initiation is the blink-in, the chain-stun, the catch that locks an enemy down so the team can pile on. Good initiation wins fights before they start; bad initiation feeds you 1v5.
ink
Street
Tattoos, especially those done inside prison with improvised equipment.
ink stick
General
Marine Corps slang for an ordinary writing pen.
inkigayo sandwich

In the inmate code, a derogatory contrast to 'convict,' meaning one who does not follow prison politics and is easily fooled or manipulated.
inner child
Internet
In healing discourse, the self you reparent to address old pain.

General
To introduce new methods, ideas, or products.
instant block
Gaming
A defensive tech where you input block on the precise frame the attack connects. Nail it and you eat less blockstun and less pushback, so you stay close enough to punish or keep your own offense alive. Tight timing, big payoff.
instaofficial
Internet
The point at which a couple confirms their relationship publicly by posting a photo together on Instagram, the modern equivalent of 'making it official.'
institutionalized

into row z
General
Booting the ball as far as possible away from danger, sending it deep into the seats.
into the black
General
Retreating onto ground that has already burned — "the black" — as a survival tactic when a wildland fire blows up and overruns the line. The logic: fire needs fuel, the black has none left, so it's the safest place to be when everything else is about to ignite. One of the named safety zones in LCES (Lookouts, Communications, Escape routes, Safety zones) and a core concept in every wildland refresher.
intubation

The placement of an endotracheal tube through the mouth or nose into the windpipe to keep the airway open and allow mechanical ventilation.
inv
Internet
Shorthand for 'invite' — the discord.gg link you ping someone to get them into your server. Doubles as a verb: to inv someone is to send them one.
invade
Gaming
Crossing into enemy territory to rob their neutral camps, snatch a buff, or set up an ambush before they get there. High risk, high disrespect.
invert

invisible lat syndrome
General
Mockingly named condition where a lifter walks with arms held far out from the body as though enormous lats force them apart — even when they don't have them. Abbreviated ILS.
inward heelflip
General
A flip trick pairing a heelflip with a backside shove-it, so the board rotates and flips inward toward the rider.
ioc
General
Order condition allowing partial fills, but only on the spot. Whatever can execute immediately does; anything that can't is cancelled rather than resting on the book. Algos lean on IOCs for sweeping liquidity across venues without leaving footprints.
iou
Internet
Stands for "I owe you," acknowledging an informal debt or favor owed.
ip
General
'Initial Point' — a well-defined reference point on the ground from which an aircraft begins its final run-in to a target, or from which a ground movement is timed.
ipad kid
Internet
A young child whose primary babysitter is an iPad. The shorthand for a kid who can't sit through dinner without a screen, throws a meltdown when the battery dies, and speaks fluent Cocomelon. Used as a diagnosis more than a description — usually delivered with judgment toward the parents.
ipfs
Internet
'InterPlanetary File System' — a peer-to-peer network for storing files, commonly used to host NFT images and metadata so they aren't reliant on one server.
ipo
General
The day a private company finally lets outside investors buy a piece. Bankers price the deal the night before, the stock opens the next morning, and founders find out in real time whether they're billionaires or just rich. Underprice it and you've left money on the table; overprice it and it breaks issue and your CFO hates you forever.
ipp
Street
An Imprisonment for Public Protection sentence — an indefinite term with no fixed release date, abolished in 2012 but still affecting those sentenced under it.
