General

Shorthand for a deteriorating trajectory: a patient progressing from the O sign (mouth open) to the Q sign (tongue lolling) and onward to death.

o-dark-thirty

General

Any ungodly hour between midnight and dawn when you're being made to do something. Deliberately vague — could be 0300, could be 0445. The point is it's dark, you're tired, and someone with stripes wants you upright.

o-sign

General

Bedside shorthand for a patient who's deeply out of it — flat on their back, jaw slack, mouth hanging open in a perfect O. It's the look that tells the on-call team this one's circling the drain. Pair it with the Q-sign (tongue lolls out the side) and the prognosis gets worse. Dark humour, but every hospital in the English-speaking world uses it.

A stretch of Parkway Gardens on Chicago's South Side — one of the most documented blocks in rap history. Home turf for Lil Durk and the late King Von, who turned it into the backdrop for half a decade of drill music. The 'O' is for Odee.

Oakland, CA. The nickname stuck thanks to Bay Area rap and the late-80s group Oaktown's 3.5.7, and it's been the city's hip-hop alias ever since — used by everyone from Too $hort to Keak da Sneak.

A placeable Dota ward that grants flying vision over a big radius for a few minutes. It doesn't reveal invis — it just lets you see what's happening so you don't get jumped.

A clinical description of a patient whose consciousness and responsiveness are blunted, more depressed than lethargic but not fully comatose.

Describing something clumsy-looking, ungainly or unattractive, usually in a derogatory way. Also spelt obzokie.

Describes a person (or thing) believed to be impervious to harm — bullets, blades, misfortune. It began as the name of a real charm/ritual practice and became a badge of fearlessness after Anambra's Bakassi Boys vigilantes were said to walk through gunfire unharmed while shouting the word.

A traditional Igbo honorific originally bestowed on a distinguished warrior or community leader, meaning roughly 'great man' or 'champion.' In modern street and pop-culture slang it's used more loosely to hype a man who is successful, influential, physically impressive, or generally 'the boss.'

The 'Overseas Experience' rite of passage where young New Zealanders travel and work abroad, often in the UK, for an extended period.

A cook announcing they're leaving their station for a minute — bathroom, walk-in run, smoke, whatever. It's a courtesy and a safety thing: the rest of the line knows to watch their pans, catch their tickets, and not let anything burn. Always answered with an audible "heard."

Describes something so good or exciting it's basically uncontrollable, like an animal that broke loose from its chain.

Out of control in a great way, beyond expectations.

off the lip

General

A vertical maneuver in which the board hits the breaking lip of the wave and then drops back down the face.

off-angle

Instead of sitting where everyone checks, you post up somewhere weird, deeper, wider, tucked off to the side. The enemy clears the common spot, relaxes, and you catch them.

off-tank

Gaming

In a two-tank setup, the off-tank is the aggressive one. Their kit isn't about protecting allies, it's about disrupting, diving and bursting the enemy.

The formal process of separating a departing employee from an organization, covering knowledge transfer, exit interviews, revoking access, and returning equipment.

Wind blowing from the land out toward the ocean, which holds waves up and grooms clean, hollow faces. Considered ideal for surfing.

General

A coordinated defensive move where the back line pushes up in unison as the ball is played, leaving forwards offside.

A planning or bonding meeting deliberately held somewhere other than the workplace.

The full-length name and acronym of Odd Future, the LA crew Tyler, the Creator built out of skate park energy and a Tumblr-era internet. Shorthand for an entire late-2000s / early-2010s aesthetic: cat hats, donut logos, Golf Wang, deliberate chaos. Most members are now bigger solo than the crew ever was.

In Igbo cosmology, an ọgbanje is a spirit-child believed to die young and be reborn to the same mother repeatedly, tormenting the family — a serious, real spiritual belief (explored in literature such as Akwaeke Emezi's 'Freshwater'). In casual modern slang, the word gets stretched loosely to describe someone unpredictable, dramatic, or hard to control, without the original spiritual weight.
