You're free, technically — but the system still has its hand on your collar. Curfews, tags, no-go zones, mandatory check-ins. Break a rule and you go straight back inside. In drill, being 'on papers' means moving careful, keeping off the wrong roads, avoiding the wrong faces, because one slip = recall.

on road

Active in street life — out hustling, dealing, riding for the gang, or just visibly present on the block. A whole identity wrapped in two words: if you're 'on road,' the streets are your job, your scene, and your reputation.

on sight

Signals that a person will be attacked or confronted the moment they are spotted.

on smoke

Out on the road specifically to start something with opps — not chilling, not working, hunting. If a man's 'on smoke' he's driving through enemy postcodes with the intent to score. Borrowed from US street slang where 'smoke' means trouble or confrontation.

Under electronic monitoring — wearing a court-ordered ankle tag that tracks your location and enforces a curfew. Common bail or post-release condition in the UK, and a recurring drill-bar flex (or grievance) when rappers reference their legal status.

To be 'on the ale' is to be out drinking, usually beer.

Physically posted at a station — grill, sauté, fry, garde manger — banging out tickets during a service. If you're 'on the line' you're not prepping, not expo, not chatting. You're cooking food that's going out the window in the next four minutes.

A radio phrase meaning a station is active and communicating on the shared radio network ('net'); to 'get on the net' is to make contact via radio.

When everyone has the same understanding of a plan or situation.

Being in the yard, the fenced outdoor space where inmates exercise, socialize, and conduct prison politics. Much of prison life happens 'on the yard.'

Switched on for violence — either intent on doing it, or actively in the middle of it. The 'volts' is the live current; if you're on volts you're plugged in and dangerous.
