General

The opening bell for a reading session — when the clever, cutting insults are about to fly. 'Library' is the metaphorical place where you read people, since reading is the art of the well-aimed verbal takedown. On RuPaul's Drag Race, Ru declares the library open before the queens read each other to filth, then asks 'Because reading is what?' — answer: 'Fundamental!'. The whole bit is lifted from the reading tradition immortalised in Paris Is Burning.

the lodge

General

How Detroiters refer to the John C. Lodge Freeway, M-10, the artery that cuts from downtown out through the northwest side. Nobody local says 'M-10'. You take the Lodge.

the loop

Street

Interstate 610, the freeway loop that circles inner Houston. The city splits itself by it — 'inside the loop' = central, urbane, walkable-ish; 'outside the loop' = suburbs, sprawl, cheaper rent. 'Inner looper' is half-flex, half-insult depending who's saying it.

A relatively recent nickname for St. Louis.

the machine

Internet

A tongue-in-cheek reference to the market as an unstoppable, mysterious 'machine' that keeps minting money — often said sarcastically as it takes traders' money instead.

the man

The establishment or system of authority seen as controlling and oppressive.

Extended to any situation or story that doesn't logically hold together.

Groceries or shopping; 'to go for the messages' is to run errands or do the shopping.

The Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome, Minneapolis's former domed, air-supported-roof stadium, home to the Twins and Vikings until 2014.

An affectionate nickname for the Mackinac Bridge connecting Michigan's Upper and Lower Peninsulas; also 'the Bridge.'

the mile

Detroiters' shorthand for Seven Mile Road, the east-west strip that defines a huge chunk of the city's north side and its rap scene. Home turf referenced constantly by Big Sean, Tee Grizzley, and the BMF mythos. Not to be confused with Eight Mile, the city/suburb border Eminem made famous.

the minnesota goodbye

The extended, multi-stage Upper Midwest departure, involving prolonged goodbyes at the door, in the driveway, and by the car.

the mitten

General

A nickname for Michigan, especially the Lower Peninsula, whose outline resembles a mitten. Locals point to spots on their hand as a map.

the mommy track

A career trajectory, historically for mothers, involving reduced hours or ambition to balance childcare, often criticized for stalling advancement and pay.

the moon

Internet

The imagined destination for a soaring stock, invoked in 'to the moon' and 'see you on the moon' to signal extreme bullish targets.

the morra

General

Tomorrow. Shared with Scots and used across the North East — direct descendant of Middle English 'the morwe'. Pairs naturally with 'the day' (today) and 'the neet' (tonight).

the most

General

Used as the highest possible compliment: someone or something is the peak, the ultimate.

the mountain is out

Said on a rare clear day when Mount Rainier (or another peak) is visible from the city, usually with delight after a long gray spell.

the munchies

Street

The strong appetite and craving for food brought on by consuming cannabis.

the neck

General

Cheek, nerve, audacity. Usually delivered as 'the neck of him/her' when someone's done something brazen — asking for a favour after standing you up, that kind of thing. Half disbelief, half admiration.

the nickel

Street

Fifth Ward, Houston. 'Nickel' = five. One of the city's oldest Black neighbourhoods, birthplace of countless musicians and a rep so rough it picked up the second nickname 'The Bloody Nickel.'

the noo

General

Right now, at this moment, currently. The Scottish equivalent of 'just now' or 'at the minute'. Famously stuck onto the end of sentences — 'I'm awa' tae ma bed the noo'.

the numbers

Street

The Vulnerable Prisoner (VP) wing, where at-risk inmates such as sex offenders and informers are housed. 'Going on the numbers' means transferring there.

the o

Street

What you call O'Block when you don't need to spell it out — the Parkway Gardens block tied to Lil Durk and King Von. Used in lyrics and conversation where everyone already knows what 'the O' means.

the ob

General

Ocean Beach, a laid-back beach neighborhood in San Diego.

the outback

General

The vast, arid, sparsely populated interior of the continent.

the outdoor

General

An off-licence or liquor shop. Black Country and Brummie usage, dating from when pubs had a separate hatch or door selling booze for takeaway — the 'outdoor' as opposed to the indoor bar. The name stuck even when the hatches didn't.

the paint

General

The rectangular painted area under the basket extending to the free-throw line, also called the key or lane.

the pass

General

The counter between kitchen and dining room where plates land, get wiped, garnished and inspected before a runner walks them out. It's the chokepoint of service — every ticket comes through here. The chef or expo lives at the pass during a rush and basically conducts the whole orchestra from it.

Detroit's automated elevated light-rail loop circling downtown.

the pike

General

Locals' shorthand for the Massachusetts Turnpike, the east-west toll spine that runs from Logan all the way to the New York border. Nobody says 'I-90' or 'the Mass Pike' — it's just the Pike. The road you sit on for two hours in summer beach traffic and pay a small fortune in EZ-Pass tolls.

A satirical phrase depicting the Federal Reserve endlessly printing money to inflate asset prices, invoked to explain why 'stonks only go up' regardless of fundamentals.

NYC Housing Authority apartment complexes; large-scale subsidized housing, a recurring reference point in New York culture and rap.

the pru

General

The Prudential Tower — Back Bay's 52-storey insurance-company skyscraper and the second-tallest building in Boston. By extension the whole Prudential Center complex underneath it (mall, food court, the Eataly, the skywalk). No Bostonian says 'Prudential Tower' out loud; it's the Pru.

the pump

General

The satisfying post-set swelling of a worked muscle as blood floods the tissue, a hallmark sensation of resistance training.

the punters

General

Members of the public, customers or the general crowd; 'punters out in full force' means a big turnout.

the read

General

The art of the insult, ballroom style. To read someone is to expose their flaws cleverly and surgically — wit over volume, precision over rage. Dorian Corey called it 'the real art form of insult' in Paris Is Burning. Done between friends it's sport; done in a battle it's a weapon.

The northwest corner of Indiana near Chicago, home to steel mills and a Chicago-influenced accent.

The defining move of LA's jerkin' era — basically a running-man flipped in reverse, knees flicking out as you bounce backwards. If you came up in SoCal between 2008 and 2011, you learned this in someone's driveway.

the shade of it all

The verbal equivalent of clutching your pearls while loving every second. You drop it when shade is flying and the drama is delicious — half scandalised, half living for it. Latrice Royale gave it the iconic delivery: fan out, eyes wide, drawing the word out to 'the shaaaade of it all.' It's commentary from the sidelines, not the shade itself — you're reacting to the carnage, not throwing it.

The Security/Special Housing Unit where inmates are held in prolonged isolation. Often pronounced 'the shoe.'

Locals' shorthand for Sault Ste. Marie, the Lake Superior shipping town at the top of Michigan's eastern Upper Peninsula. 'Sault' is pronounced 'Soo' — the spelling never caught on in speech. Same nickname applies to its bigger Ontario twin across the locks.

Shorthand for Wall Street as a hive mind — every bank, broker-dealer, analyst and trader rolled into one entity that has opinions, expectations and grudges. "The Street" beats earnings, hates a guidance cut, and never forgives a CFO who lies on a call.

the strip

The stretch of Cedar Springs Road through Oak Lawn that's been the heart of gay Dallas for decades — bars, drag, Pride staging, the whole scene. Calling it 'the Strip' is the local shorthand; if you have to ask which strip, you're not from there.

the suck

General

What Marines call the Marine Corps — and only Marines get to call it that. The name says it: it sucks, you signed up for it sucking, and you'd do it again. Used affectionately, bitterly, and everything in between, often in the same sentence.
