Comes from Middle English atspringen, ætspringen, from Old English ætspringan (‘to rush forth, spurt out, spring out’), equivalent to at- plus spring. Compare Dutch ontspringen (‘to spring, well, outflow’) and German entspringen (‘to spring from, escape, arise’).
