The word passed through Middle English crisme from Old English crisma, which came from Medieval Latin crisma and, before that, Ecclesiastical Latin chrisma. It ultimately goes back to the Ancient Greek word for anointing, khrîsma, related to the verb khríō, meaning to anoint.
