Descended from Middle English gridirne, gredirne, gredyron, gredeyron, grydern, grydyryne, girdirin, girderen, variant forms of Middle English gredire, gredyre, which was itself an alteration of Middle English gridel ("griddle"). The ending came to be treated as iron, as though the word were built from grid and iron, and grid was later derived from this.
