Comes from Late Middle English, an alteration of whitflaw, whose first element derives either from Middle Dutch vijt or Low German fit (“abscess”), borrowed from Latin fīcus (“fig-shaped (ulcer)”), though it was also influenced by white. The same Latin loan existed in other languages too, such as Old English fic (“hemorrhoids”). See flaw.
