half a press

What does half a press mean?

In the A Button Challenge, an A press has three parts: pushing down, holding, and releasing. If you hold the button down from a previous level, that level only 'spends' part of the press, so it gets tallied as a half. That's how you get counts like 2.5x A presses.

"He clears the star with a half A press by holding A from before Mario even enters the level."

Origin

Super Mario 64 A Button Challenge, coined by pannenkoek2012. Spawned the 'an A press is an A press' meme.
