Came into English via Middle English cofre or coffre, from Old French cofre or coffre, which came from Latin cophinus (“basket”), itself from Ancient Greek κόφινος (kóphinos, “basket”). It is a doublet of coffin, and is cognate with German Koffer (“a suitcase”).
