Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between e.g. and i.e.?

Use e.g. to introduce examples drawn from a wider set, and i.e. to restate or specify exactly what you mean. "Citrus fruit, e.g. limes" means limes are one example; "citrus fruit, i.e. limes" means limes are the only thing meant.

Do you put a comma after e.g.?

American style usually puts a comma after it, as in "e.g., limes"; British style usually does not. Whichever you choose, be consistent throughout a document.

Can you use e.g. and etc. together?

Better not. E.g. already signals that the list is only a sample, so adding etc. at the end repeats the same idea.
