Came into English as Middle English eschaunge, borrowed from Anglo-Norman eschaunge, from Old French eschange (which gives modern French échange), from the verb eschanger, from Vulgar Latin *excambiāre (from Latin ex combined with Late Latin cambiō). The spelling was later altered on the basis of ex-, with the pronunciation following suit. By surface analysis it is ex- + change.
