Came into English from Middle English gyng, gynge, genge, which developed from Old English genge (“a troop, privy, company, retinue”), itself from Old Norse gengi, going back to Proto-Germanic *gangiją (“pace, walk”). It is cognate with Middle Low German gink (“a going, turn, way”), Old Norse gengi (“accompaniment, entourage, help”) and Icelandic gengi (“rate”), and related to Old English gengan (“to go”), from Proto-Germanic *gangijaną (“to go”).
