An in-your-face interrogation: who you with, who you know, prove you're really gang. Fail it and you get robbed, beaten or worse. Pass it and you might still get tested again.

g-funk

Street

Gangsta funk — the early-90s West Coast sound built on P-Funk samples, slow-rolling basslines, high-pitched synth leads (that whining 'whee-oo'), and laid-back drums. Dr. Dre's 'The Chronic' (1992) and Snoop's 'Doggystyle' (1993) are the blueprint. DJ Quik, Warren G, Nate Dogg all in the canon.

g'day

General

A casual greeting, contraction of 'good day'.

g'way outta that

An expression of disbelief, dismissal or modest deflection of a compliment. From 'get away out of that'.

g'wed

General

All-purpose green light. Cheer someone on, agree with a plan, or tell a mate to crack on with whatever they're plotting. The Scouse 'let's go'.

g2g

Internet

Quick exit-stage-left. Dinner's ready, parents are home, lecture's starting — you drop a g2g and bail. Usually followed by bye, cya, or radio silence.

A white American/Anglo; roughly 'gringo', can be neutral or derogatory.

gabeto

Slang for one's house or home. Also 'gabo'.

gachigasm

A BTTV emote signalling intense, often ironic, pleasure or hype at something on stream.

Serious, sincere romantic feelings toward an idol, streamer or VTuber — as opposed to casual fandom — often carrying possessiveness and jealousy.

To gag is to be so floored by something incredible you can barely breathe. The look, the reveal, the talent — it hits so hard you choke on it. 'I'm gagged' means you're stunned in the best way. 'Gag-worthy' is the highest shelf of impressive.

To be so floored by something stunning that you choke on the reaction, you're gagged, left speechless. It's a compliment to whatever caused it: a look, a reveal, a performance so good it knocks the air out of you.

To be gagged is to be floored — a person, look or moment so fierce you literally can't speak, like you're choking on it. It's awe with a side of shock. From Black drag and ballroom, where 'gagging' described that gasping, jaw-on-the-floor reaction to something stunning. Drag Race made 'I'm gagging' and 'gagged' household phrases.

Parched. The thirst that has you eyeing up the tap. Most common after a session, a run, or three hours stuck on a Northern Rail replacement bus.

Positive results from lifting, especially increases in muscle mass or strength. Often stylized 'gainz' online for extra bro-cred.

gains goblin

A joking personification of gains loss — the mythical goblin who 'steals' your muscle when you miss workouts, undereat, or under-recover.

gains train

General

A metaphor for being locked into a run of consistent progress; 'staying on the gains train' means keeping the momentum of muscle-building going.

gainz

General

The deliberately misspelled version of 'gains,' used jokingly online to signal you belong to lifting culture.

gainz goblin

A humorous imaginary 'goblin' blamed for eroding your progress when you skip workouts, undereat protein or miss sleep — the enemy of gains.

A world-famous, elite player, especially one of the marquee names signed by Real Madrid.

A silly or foolish person; literally a rose-breasted cockatoo native to Australia.

To go along or go on; 'galang good' = behave / go well. Popularised globally by M.I.A.'s song 'Galang'.

A dismissal telling someone to go away and mind their own affairs.

An idea so elaborately contrarian its author thinks they've transcended common sense, when in fact they've just out-thought themselves into nonsense. Almost always used sarcastically.

Multicultural London English for a group of girls, women or female friends. The female counterpart to 'mandem'. Used affectionately for your crew of girls, or generically for women as a collective.

A Japanese video game genre centred on interactions with — and often the pursuit of romance with — attractive anime-style female characters. Not necessarily explicit.

gallery

In New Orleans, a roofed second-floor balcony or covered walkway that hangs over the sidewalk — often the cast-iron lacework you picture from the French Quarter. Locals draw a hard line: a balcony is unsupported and small; a gallery has posts down to the street and runs the length of the building. Call it the wrong one in front of a NOLA native and you'll get corrected.

Daring, cheeky and full of swagger; confident, flashy and irrepressible, sometimes to the point of cockiness.

gally

General

A girl. Caribbean-derived pronunciation of 'gal' carried into MLE. Singular by default, but 'gallydem' / 'gyaldem' is the plural — a whole group of girls.

galvanized square steel

Internet

A quote from a viral video of a man confidently listing materials ('galvanized square steel, hand-forged brackets'), used to mock smug, overconfident competence.

galvo

Street

Lazy-tongue shorthand for Galveston, the island city down I-45 from Houston. Where H-Town goes when it wants saltwater and a seawall cruise.

gambol

General

A forward roll, the gymnastic kind. Standard English uses 'gambol' for a playful skip; Brummies repurposed it for the specific tumble across a PE mat. Ask anyone from Birmingham what a forward roll is and they'll look at you funny.

Very courageous, especially against the odds.

game of s.k.a.t.e.

General

A game, modeled on basketball's HORSE, in which players take turns setting tricks the others must match; each miss earns a letter of S-K-A-T-E, and spelling the whole word eliminates you.

game of two halves

A cliche for a game in which the pattern flips at the break, one team bossing the first half and the other the second.

game sense

Gaming

The invisible skill. Not aim, not reflexes, but knowing from a single sound, a missing rotation, or the round count exactly where the enemy is and what they're planning. Great game sense means you're already where the play is going.
