When the hot gas layer at ceiling level hits its ignition temperature and flames go rolling across the ceiling, ahead of the main fire. It's a warning sign — flashover is coming if you don't cool the gases now.

Range Of Motion: the distance through which a joint or muscle moves during an exercise; 'full ROM' means completing the whole movement.

A digital copy of a game pulled straight off a physical cartridge or disc. Dump it once and the game lives as a file you can run in any emulator. The raw material of the whole emulation scene.

Modifying a game's ROM data to change gameplay, graphics, text or anything else baked into the cartridge image. This is how you get custom Mario worlds, translation patches and full-blown fan remakes.

A topic, fact or obsession that lives rent-free in your head and crosses your mind several times a week for no real reason. Born from a viral 2023 TikTok trend where women asked the men in their lives how often they thought about the actual Roman Empire and were horrified by the answer (multiple times a week, sometimes daily). The phrase quickly slipped its original meaning and now covers anyone's pet mental obsession.

Brand name (Southwire) for Type NM — non-metallic sheathed cable — that's become the generic word for it, like Kleenex or Hoover. Flat plastic jacket, usually white (14-gauge) or yellow (12-gauge) or orange (10-gauge), with two or three insulated conductors plus a bare ground inside. The default residential wiring in the US and Canada.

A newcomer in their debut season or someone new and green at the top level.

rooster tail

The fan of snow spray thrown up behind a snowboard when carving or slashing through powder, resembling a rooster's tail. A big rooster tail signals a hard, spirited turn.

Very tired; or of a thing, broken beyond use. (Note: 'root' also has a vulgar sense.)

rope bunny

The one who loves being on the receiving end of the rope. A rope bunny is a bottom whose thing is bondage itself, the surrender, the stillness, the held tension of being bound. The counterpart to the rigger or rope top who does the tying. Affectionate, scene-standard term; nothing diminishing about it.

The moment in a cardiac arrest when the patient's own heart starts pumping again after CPR, defib and drugs. Pronounced 'rosk'. The single word every crew wants to say on a working arrest — it doesn't mean they walk out of hospital, but it means you've got something to hand over. Called over the radio so the receiving ED can prep post-arrest care.
