A learned borrowing from Latin lachrymōsus, lacrimōsus, formed from lachryma, lacrima (“tear”) and -osus (“-ful”). This in turn goes back to Old Latin dacrima, from Proto-Indo-European *dakru-, and is cognate with English tear.
