What is the difference between unsubscribing and marking as spam?
Unsubscribing tells the sender to remove you from their list, which legitimate senders must honour. Marking as spam tells your email provider the message was unwanted, which damages the sender's reputation and filters similar mail for everyone. Use unsubscribe for mail you once agreed to, and spam for mail you never did.
Is it safe to click unsubscribe links?
For mail from a company you recognise, yes: legitimate senders are legally required to provide a working unsubscribe link. For obvious spam or phishing, do not click, because the link can simply confirm your address is live. Use your mail client's built-in unsubscribe button where it appears.
Why do I still get emails after unsubscribing?
Senders are usually allowed a short window, often around ten business days, to process the request. If mail continues after that, or if the link never worked, the sender may be in breach of anti-spam law and marking it as spam is reasonable.
