Firefighter Assist and Search Team / Rapid Intervention Crew. A dedicated team that stages outside a working fire doing nothing else but waiting to charge in and rescue any firefighter who gets trapped, lost, injured, or runs out of air inside. NFPA 1407 requires one on the scene of every structure fire. FAST is the FDNY/New York name; RIC (or RIT, Rapid Intervention Team) is the term used pretty much everywhere else. Same job, different patch.

Cardiovascular exercise performed in a fasted state (typically before breakfast), popularly believed to enhance fat loss.

Affectionate nickname for the C-130 Hercules, the four-engine turboprop workhorse that's hauled troops, vehicles and pallets for every Western military since 1956. The name comes from the bulging fuselage — fat-bodied compared with sleek jets — and was cemented when the US Navy Blue Angels' support C-130 became known as Fat Albert, putting on JATO-bottle takeoffs at airshows. The handle is now universal.

Locals usually drop the 'Faubourg' in conversation ('the Marigny', 'Tremé') but it's there on every street sign and real-estate listing.
