Diagonal cutting pliers — short, angled jaws designed for cutting wire flush. Universal in electrical, low-voltage, and general construction work. 'Pass me the dikes' on any jobsite gets you a pair of Kleins, no questions asked.

diligent

Drill twist on the dictionary word. Calling someone diligent in this scene means they're active — they put in work, they're reliable when it kicks off, they don't duck the smoke. Same family as 'active' or 'hot stepper'. High praise, not corporate fluff.

dilly boy

General

A young male sex worker, specifically one working the Piccadilly Circus area of London — 'the Dilly'. A piece of very location-specific gay history baked right into the slang, from an era when that patch was the place.

dime

Gaming

An assist — a pass that leads directly to a teammate scoring. A 'dime' implies a particularly clean or clever feed.

dime bag

Street

A small bag of cannabis costing about ten dollars; exact weight varies by dealer.

dímelo cantando

General

A playful greeting/prompt meaning 'tell me what's going on' — literally 'tell it to me singing'.

dimp

A cigarette stub or butt. The unsmoked end left over after you've had your fill — or, in leaner times, the next half-smoke when you're skint.

When a guest finishes their meal and walks out without settling the check. In most places the server gets stuck eating the cost unless management eats it instead. Treated as theft of services legally; treated as a personal betrayal by the staff.

The way Houston says 'downtown'. The 'ow' collapses into a long 'i' until 'downtown' becomes 'dine-tine'. You'll hear it on screwtapes, in barbershops, and never on the news.

To gain a level. People announce it in chat the second it happens — half celebration, half asking for a 'grats'.

A stolen or unregistered car, kept cheap and disposable — no tax, no insurance, no paper trail to you. Used for joyrides and for moving on jobs where you don't want your own plates clocked.

To ignore someone on purpose. Blank their texts, walk past them in the street, leave them on read. Ghosting before ghosting had a name. You 'gie someone a dinghy' or just 'dinghy' them.

To dance with unrestrained joy and vigour; also a shout of celebration.

dink

Gaming

You land a headshot but they've got a helmet, so they survive on low HP. That metallic 'dink' sound is where the name comes from. A dink means they're one tap from dead, so you call it out and your team finishes the job.

The absolute truth or reliable information.

Genuine or authentically Australian. Also spelt 'dinki-di'.

The climactic backward fall in vogue — you drop, one leg folded under you, back hitting the floor on the beat. The mainstream calls it a 'death drop'; ballroom calls it a dip, full stop. Insiders are firm about this: 'death drop' and 'shablam' are outsider names. Land it on the beat and the room loses it.

A Dominican filler meaning 'supposedly' or 'yeah, right', used to flag doubt or disbelief about what was said, much like 'allegedly' but more sarcastic.

Slang for death; in naval aviation, specifically flying one's aircraft into the ground — low-level showboating ('flat-hatting') gone fatally wrong.

dirty bulk

General

A bulking approach with a large calorie surplus from calorie-dense, often junk foods, accepting extra fat gain alongside muscle.

dirty chai

General

Chai latte plus a shot of espresso. The espresso 'dirties' the clean spiced milk. Two shots makes it a 'filthy chai.' Originally an off-menu hack, now printed on boards nationwide.

dirty money

General

A bonus on top of normal wages for tasks that are unusually filthy, smelly, or hazardous, classically sewer work, asbestos stripping, or anything involving sludge. Old British union term, negotiated into trade agreements.

dirty sprite

Lean by way of its most famous mixer. Sprite went 'dirty' the moment codeine syrup hit it, turning clear soda purple. Future cemented the name with his 2014 mixtape 'Monster' and the full 'Dirty Sprite' tape series — at one point Sprite themselves had to quietly distance the brand from the drug.

The catch-all for crowd control. Stun, root, silence, hex, ensnare — if it takes a hero out of the fight for a moment, it's a disable. Chain enough together and a target dies without ever pressing a button.

A transition trick in which the rider comes up a ramp, turns, and lands so the middle of the board rests across the coping or lip with the nose or tail hanging over each side.

disband

Internet

When a group officially ends and its members go separate ways, often after contracts expire. A dreaded event in any fandom.

disco belt

The high-visibility reflective belt troops are required to wear for safety, mocked for its incongruously flashy look — as if headed to a disco.
