Old-school name for the most defensive blue chips — utilities, consumer staples, telecoms. Low volatility, fat dividend, won't blow up overnight. The kind of name a trustee buys for clients who literally cannot wear a loss.

A widow maker is an investment or strategy so persistently unprofitable or risky that it repeatedly ruins those who attempt it. The classic example is shorting Japanese government bonds.

peepoSad but wider, which somehow makes the sadness funnier and bigger. Chat spams it when something's a genuine bummer.

A smart-arse, a chancer, somebody who fancies themselves and lets you know it. Usually the boy in the pub looking for a square go he can't actually win. From 'wide' = sly/streetwise.

Streetwise and on the ball — the opposite of a sap. Someone who's wide spots the wind-up coming, knows the angle, and isn't getting done. Often paired with 'cute' as in 'cute and wide' — a uniquely Irish compliment-slash-warning about a person who knows exactly what they're at.

'Wicked smart' rendered in the r-dropping Boston accent — extremely intelligent.

Describing something impressively intense, cool, or extreme.

Hypothetical version of AITA — the poster hasn't done the thing yet and wants the jury's call before they pull the trigger. Often a thinly veiled way to get permission for the petty move they were always going to make.

'Wounded In Action' — a casualty classification for a service member injured as a direct result of enemy action but not killed.

An emphatic yes; the same as 'wey aye'. Iconic Geordie affirmation.

A member of the Doctor Who fandom; a recognizable cosplay and panel contingent at many general and sci-fi conventions.

The famously daft Welshism trotted out at last orders when everyone's grabbing their stuff off the back of a chair. It's just asking 'whose coat is this?' — the 'that jacket' bit is the same garment said twice. Often used self-mockingly by the Welsh themselves, and impersonated (usually badly) by the English doing a stereotype valleys accent.

Brilliant, top notch, savage. Used in Ireland (and Dublin especially) as a flat compliment — a whopper night, a whopper goal, a whopper bird. Less about size, more about quality.

A playful Cardiff nonsense term used for a fuss, a gadget, or an unnameable thing.

To give a whipping or beating; also a whoopin' as a noun.

A TikTok-born compliment used as a caption or comment when someone is serving a look, attitude or main-character energy. Phrased as a faux-shocked question — like you don't even recognise them through the glow — to over-the-top hype them up. Used on selfies, pets, toddlers in sunglasses, anyone briefly thriving.

The full chant — 'Who dat say dey gonna beat dem Saints?' — shorthand for New Orleans Saints fandom and, more broadly, civic pride in the city itself.

The horrible sweaty, pale, dizzy state you hit when you've had too much drink or weed — named because your face literally goes white. Usually paired with 'pull' or 'take': pullin' a whitey.

The ridge of turbulence and foam left after a wave breaks. Beginners often learn by riding the whitewater.
