Skilfully clowning on someone — back-and-forth roasting where the goal is the joke landing, not actual beef. If you're soft, don't join in.

A full-throated cry of shock, used when something properly takes you by surprise. Three old minced oaths in one — the comic-strip Scots version of 'oh my god, what the hell, help'. Forever associated with Oor Wullie sitting on his upturned bucket.

A mild exclamation of surprise or dismay, like 'gosh'.

Cuban slang for someone who hustles tourists, selling goods, services, or companionship; 'jinetera' feminine.

A trip to the toilet for a wee. Rhymes with 'piddle' and almost always clipped to just 'a Jimmy'. One of the rare bits of Cockney that broke out of the East End and went properly national — your nan in Yorkshire knows this one.

Informal term for an involuntarily shaking or restless leg (as in restless legs syndrome or nocturnal myoclonus).

What the rest of America calls sprinkles. In New England (especially Boston), 'jimmies' specifically refers to the chocolate ones; the rainbow ones are just 'sprinkles'. Order an ice cream at a Boston shop and you'll be asked which you want.

jiminy christmas

An inoffensive exclamation of surprise or exasperation used to avoid taking the Lord's name in vain.

You flick out of cover and snap straight back, over and over. The point is to make them waste shots, reveal their position, or eat a couple of free hits without ever committing your whole body.

You tap the strafe key to flash your body out and snap straight back behind cover. Bait the enemy into firing or revealing themselves without committing to a full peek.

The skinny back alley running between two rows of terraced houses. Where bins live, kids kick balls, and shortcuts happen. Pure Liverpool geography.

Stands for "just in case," used to explain a precautionary action.

Got dumped. Stood up. Blown out at the last minute. To jib someone is to drop them — a date, a plan, a person — and to be jibbed is to be on the receiving end of that. Brutal in feeling, casual in delivery.
